African Trypanosomiasis.

چکیده
A previously healthy 60-year-old woman presented with a 2-to-3day history of fevers, chills, myalgias, headache, and two pruritic areas on her back. She had returned 3 days earlier from a 2-week trip to Botswana and Zimbabwe that had included canoeing and camping. She had received vaccines before her travel and was continuing to take atovaquone–proguanil for malaria prophylaxis. The examination was notable for the two erythematous lesions, each measuring 3 to 4 cm in diameter, on her back (Panel A shows one of the lesions). Laboratory tests revealed a mild leukopenia and moderate thrombocytopenia (85,000 platelets per cubic millimeter). A peripheral-blood smear detected no parasites. Symptoms persisted 4 days later, at which time there was evidence of severe thrombocytopenia (12,000 platelets per cubic millimeter). A peripheral-blood smear revealed multiple organisms consistent with Trypanosoma brucei (most likely T. brucei rhodesiense) (Panel B). Examination of the cerebrospinal fluid was unremarkable. The patient was treated for several days with intravenous pentamidine; she then received five doses of suramin over a period of 3 weeks. Her recovery was notable for prolonged fatigue, which lasted for several months.

African Trypanosomiasis Gambiense, Italy
African trypanosomiasis caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense has not been reported in Italy. We report 2 cases diagnosed in the summer of 2004. Theses cases suggest an increased risk for expatriates working in trypanosomiasis-endemic countries. Travel medicine clinics should be increasingly aware of this potentially fatal disease.
متن کاملHuman African Trypanosomiasis Transmission, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo
To investigate the epidemiology of human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, 2 entomologic surveys were conducted in 2005. Trypanosoma brucei gambiense and human-blood meals were found in tsetse fly midguts, which suggested active disease transmission. Vector control should be used to improve human African trypanosomiasis control efforts.
متن کاملFuzzy Logic Combined with Dempster-Shafer Theory for African Trypanosomiasis Spreading Prediction
This paper presents Fuzzy Logic and Dempster-Shafer belief theory to encounter the most important and unexpected enemies of the human been the epidemic diseases through the prediction of the risk of African Trypanosomiasis spreading. This work is estimated basic probability assignments using Fuzzy membership functions which capture vagueness. The advantage of this method is a new method to obta...
متن کاملRisk for Human African Trypanosomiasis, Central Africa, 2000–2009
Comprehensive georeference records for human African trypanosomiasis in Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon were combined with human population layers to estimate a kernel-smoothed relative risk function. Five risk categories were mapped, and ≈3.5 million persons were estimated to be at risk for this disease.
